May 27 - May 31

I can make connections between new ideas texts with known ideas and information.

I can analyze ideas and information to support my understanding of texts.

I can synthesize ideas and information in texts to expand understandings.

(Grade 6 ELAL)

In French class, students learned about the Biodome in Montreal; this led to discussion in the classroom about zoos and conservation sites and the ethics behind keeping animals in captivity. We found some articles to read that describe the pros and cons. Students practiced reading the information, taking jot notes, and forming an opinion about captive animals. They shared their ideas with us on an OREO (Opinion, Reason, Evidence, restate Opinion.)

After making connections and synthesizing the information to form an opinion, students learned how to "Step Inside." Everybody chose a specific animal to read about and took some jot notes to help them see from their animal's perspective. In order to do this, students had to understand what they read, connect it to what they already knew about animals in captivity, and make inferences about what their animal was thinking, wondering, and noticing.

This was hard work but the students knocked it out of the park! We are super proud to see how much reading and comprehension skills have progressed over the course of the year!
